The swirl of lace, the crease of the white envelope, and the pink rosebuds on the traditional card that you held in your hands bring a smile to your face – the paper has taken on a life of its own, and you know that it is about to become something special.
It was tradition to give paper as a gift at weddings, birthdays, and anniversaries. A token of appreciation and love in the form of reciting beautiful lines of poesy or simply writing of how one was feeling was expressed best within the confines of paper. While reminiscing on past experiences, it is breathtaking to understand that these pieces of paper were filled with thoughts that now remain an integral part of our lives.
Making memories with the gift of paper comes with the spirit of nostalgia and truly entwines us in the present, present in us and our fears, our joys and our sorrows. It keeps alive the spirit of the times that have gone by and the feelings that linger within the past. When I was gifted paper and wrote about these experiences, something about the process made me feel warm inside. What I was creating may have been a simple sheet of paper but it was also an everlasting expression of something bigger.
The smile of joy when receiving these traditional pieces of paper which are thoughtful, personalised, and saturated with meaning, brings immense happiness. We can’t just let the memory of the past dissolve over time, and paper helps us hang onto those magical moments. As I learnt about the traditional gift of paper and the art form of writing, I became so filled with emotion – a blank canvas waiting to be adorned with the ideas, joy, and memories I had experienced during my life’s journey.
I felt blessed by being able to carry the gift of paper with me and at the same time bewildered, because I began to realise that all of the memories were to be shared, dreams were to be pursued, sorrows were to be expressed, and happiest moments were to be recreated with these little paper tokens. My ideas could not be presented in any other way than within the realm of traditional gift giving. Paper became a personal symbolic embrace that kept the connection alive between the past and present in a heartwarming manner.
It was the permanence of paper which I fell in love with, its ability to document any subject matter and emotion was uncannily second to none. Handwritten words travel faster to the heart as compared to any other form of communication. I found solace in the fact that I had the power to mark each word, looping its way to form a sentence and express my deepest thoughts to a loved one.
I would write about the journey I took, the fears that seem to linger, and the instances that had caused the biggest change in me. Each thought and emotion was internalised, processed and expressed on the paper, giving a sense of accomplishment. There were times I had to rewrite the letter or the poem multiple times in order to ensure that the message was conveyed with precision and sincerity.
The power of paper entrenched its claws into my soul, so much that each day I would wait eagerly to meet the crispness and freshness of paper. Little did I know that the beauty and fragility of a sheet would become a symbol of my journey and the love that was nurtured and spread in a traditional way.
